Kentucky State University women’s basketball won a nail-biter, 61-58, against SIAC opponent Lane College Monday evening at the Exum Center.
KSU (9-10, 5-5 SIAC) was led by junior guard Brittani Rizzi who netted a team-high 18 points while senior forward Aliyah Gipson added 17 points and snagged eight rebounds and senior forward Logan Powell grabbed a season-high 14 boards for the Thorobrettes.
Rizzi was lights out in the first frame as the Bedford, Ind. native scored nine points to propel the home squad to an early 11-0 run in the first five minutes of play.
The Lady Dragons fought back against in the second quarter, outscoring KSU 13-10 to cut the lead 31-23 heading into halftime.
The Thorobrettes struggled against the hard-nosed Lane defense in the third stanza as the Lady Dragons took a 52-51 lead into the final quarter.
KSU clawed its way back into the lead in the final frame, outscoring the visitors 20-16 in the final ten minutes of play to pick up its ninth win of the season.
The Thorobrettes hit the road on Saturday as they face Lemoyne-Owen College in SIAC action for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
