The Eastern Kentucky University football team held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium.
“It’s what we expected from practice number six and the first scrimmage of the spring,” head coach Mark Elder said. “Some good and some bad, some ups and some downs. There was a lot of energy and a lot of excitement out here today. I’m very pleased with the effort.”
While the offense had plenty of impressive moments, the defense allowed just one touchdown.
Early in the scrimmage, running back Ethan Thomas took a screen pass and turned it into a 40-yard gain down the right sideline. LJ Smith capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Neiko Creamer made an outstanding one-handed reception along the right sideline for what would have been a 22-yard catch from newcomer Garrett Kruczek, but Creamer came down out of bounds.
A pair of transfer running backs – Jason Lewis (Arizona State) and LJ Scott (Louisville) – had a number of long runs.
On the defensive side Eric Reed intercepted a pass.
“There was about a 30-degree temperature change from what we had been used to recently,” Elder said. “We had to slow some things down between periods.”
The Colonels have three practices scheduled for next week. The spring practice period wraps up on Saturday, April 15 with the annual Maroon & White Game at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
