Future Cardinal Shayla Scanlan was selected by the Tewaaraton Foundation as one of two 2017 recipients of the Tewaaraton Native American Scholarships, presented by US Lacrosse. Both were honored at the Tewaaraton Awards ceremony last night in Washington D.C.
The award is given to one male and one female student each year, the scholarship honors high school students of Haudenosaunee / Iroquois heritage who exemplify high character, leadership, and academics both on and off the lacrosse field.
Scanlan is a member of the Seneca Nation, Wolf Clan, and resides in Perrysburg, N.Y. She will be attending Louisville University and play lacrosse for the Cardinals next year. A senior captain at Lake Shore Senior High School, she was a first team Western New York honoree and played for the Haudenosaunee team at the 2015 FIL U19 World Championship.
In her scholarship essay, Scanlan wrote of how “lacrosse is not just a game; it is a way of life,” and she shares that way of life with the next generation of lacrosse players by coaching and mentoring young girls for Seneca Valley Lacrosse.
“US Lacrosse’s ten year commitment to the US Lacrosse Tewaaraton scholarship fund affirms our shared reverence for the sports Native American heritage and celebrates our commitment to preserving the sport’s history as we pass the game forward,” said Susie Chase, vice president for philanthropy and partnerships for US Lacrosse.
