NKU Soccer’s Barkei named HL Goalkeeper of the Year; Moyes earns Freshmen Team honors

Northern Kentucky men’s soccer student-athlete Jim Barkei was named the Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year, and Harvey Moyes earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Freshmen Team. The organization announced the awards on Monday afternoon.

“Congratulations to both Jim and Harvey. They are fully deserving of these accolades, and I am very pleased for them,” said NKU head coach Stu Riddle.

Barkei, a redshirt junior from Downers Grove, Ill., had an outstanding year for the Norse after transferring from Loyola University – Chicago. He had a 0.84 goals against average and a 0.797 save percentage. Barkei also recorded eight shutouts on the season, which is tied for first in the Horizon League and ranks 13th in NCAA Division I. In Horizon League matches, Barkei ranked first in saves (36), shutouts (5), save percentage (.857), shutouts per game (0.56), and goals against average (0.63). He was also named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18 and Oct. 16.

“Jim has taken this opportunity to join us at NKU and has excelled in the net this season,” stated Riddle.

Moyes came to NKU by way of Glasgow, Scotland. He started in 16 matches this season for the Norse in his freshman season. Moyes played 1,241 minutes, which was the fifth-highest on the team. He also scored the game-winning goal against Dayton on Sept. 13 to help lead the Norse to a 1-0 victory.

“Harvey had a very good freshman year with us, and we know he will be a big part of what we are doing in future seasons,” said Riddle.

NKU ended the 2017 campaign with a winning record of 7-6-4. The team’s eight shutouts this season were the most in the program’s Division I era.

“Overall, it’s another step in the right direction for this program, and we will be working immediately to improve on and off the field again in 2018,” stated Riddle.
