Thomas More Volleyball Falls to No. 21 Christopher Newport 3-2, in NCAA First Round

The Thomas More College volleyball team fell, 3-2, to 21st-ranked Christopher Newport University tonight (Thursday, November 9, 2017) in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Championship’s Atlanta, Georgia Regional hosted by Emory University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. The Captains won the match by the scores of 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25 and 15-11.

With the loss, the Saints end the Season at 29-6. With the win, the Captains improve to 28-3 and will play either seventh-ranked Emory or Worcester State University tomorrow in a second round match.

Thomas More had four players register double-digit kills led by sophomore middle hitter Jenna Mummert (Batavia, Ohio/Clermont Northeastern), who had a match-high 24. Joining her in double-digits kills was sophomore outside hitter Madison Krumpelman (Crestview Hills, Ky./Holy Cross) with 16, first-year outside hitter Carlee Lambert (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) with 12 and sophomore outside hitter Alli Borders (Florence, Ky./Boone County) with 11. Junior setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) paced the offense with 57 assists.

Senior defensive specialist Rachel Bronner (Reading, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) led the Saints on the defensive side of the net with 26 digs. Krumpleman add 22 digs, first-year defensive specialist Jessica Ginn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) finished with20 and Fessler tallied 18. Sophomore middle hitter Rana Cousin (Bowling Green, Ky./Warren Central) led the Saints’ blocking with four total blocks, while Borders recorded three.

Thomas More was making the program’s 15th NCAA Division III Championship appearance and won its eighth Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season title and eighth PAC Championship Tournament this season.
