University of Louisville senior defender Tim Kubel was named Thursday to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Scholar All-America First Team. It marked the second consecutive season Kubel has earned the Scholar All-America accolade after being chosen as a First Team selection in 2016.
In the classroom, Kubel accumulated a 3.69 GPA while majoring in finance at UofL. On the pitch, Kubel concluded his final collegiate season as a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and an All-ACC First Team honoree while scoring six goals with seven assists in 19 matches in 2017. A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Kubel closed his career with 21 goals and a school record 26 assists in 82 matches during his four seasons.
Kubel departs Louisville as a two-time All-American, two-time Scholar All-American, four-time All-ACC selection and a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Along with his career assists record, Kubel is also Louisville’s single season assists record holder registering 11 assists in 2016. A team captain in each of the last two seasons, this former ACC Freshman of the Year honoree is also a three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection.
Players on this year’s Scholar All-America Teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom at the All-America Luncheon on January 20, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in conjunction with the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Convention. Student-athletes receiving Scholar All-America recognition at the NCAA Division I level must meet the following criteria:
• 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout career
• Started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contribute to their team
• Nominated by head coach of current College Services member institution
• Junior or above in academic standing; and, if a transfer student, in second year at school
The Cardinals closed the 2017 season with a 13-2-5 record after suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 shootout loss to Akron in last Friday’s NCAA Championship quarterfinal match at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Under the guidance of head coach Ken Lolla, Louisville reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last eight years.
