For the first time in 38 years, the Murray State football team has a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Senior defensive back Zach Shipley was named as a second-team Academic All-American Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
He is the first Racer football player to earn the award since Kris Robbins in 1979 and just the third overall, along with Eddie McFarland in 1976. With his selection Thursday, Shipley becomes the 19th different Racer across all sports to earn the honor, totaling 23 combined selections.
Shipley, a health and physical education major from Shelbyville, Kentucky, is in his first semester of graduate school after graduating last May with a 3.97 GPA. He capped his final season in blue and gold with 37 total tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss. In addition, he had two pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery. He also helped lead the Racers off the field by serving as a captain through its G.U.T.S. team.
