Kentucky State University women’s basketball dropped an 85-50 road exhibition at NCAA Division I, Mid-American Conference member Western Michigan University, Friday night at the Read Fieldhouse/University Center.

The Thorobrettes (2-9, 2-2) move to 0-2 all-time against WMU and are 1-1 in exhibition games against division I opponents in 2017. The Broncos (6-5) have counteracted a three-game losing streak in late November to winning four of their last five matchups.

“We played super hard, and I loved our fight,” said head coach Terrance Slater. “We competed at both ends, and I felt like we took some steps in the right direction. We competed, and we had some freshman that stepped up.”

The freshman trio of guard Wynter Webb, guard Khaliah Herbert, and forward Erica Jones combined for 19 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. All three played over 20 minutes on the night.

WMU controlled and dominated two deciding factors against the visitors, with a plus 17 rebound margin (50-34) and a minus 12 margin in turnovers. KSU committed 28 turnovers with the host registering 20 steals, resulting in 40 points off turnovers.

Junior forward Jordan Campbell notched her first double-digit scoring game since a Nov. 27 matchup against Albany State University, as she led the green and gold with 11 points and four rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

Junior guard Lyndsey Downing accounted for a balanced attack with eight points, five assists, and three rebounds with a team-high 34 minutes. Junior forward Brooke Wallace grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds with five points.

The four-game road swing will come to an end for the Thororbettes the next time they take the hardwood as they visit Atlanta, Georgia on Monday to take on Clark Atlanta University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm ET as a part of a doubleheader with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 pm ET.
