As the C-USA Freshman of the Week, Elgedawy was nominated for the award, which was chosen by Mel Greenberg, the USBWA coordinator for women’s basketball. South Florida’s Kitija Laksa was also named the USBWA National Player of the Week by Greenberg.
Elgedawy enjoyed one of her strongest weeks yet on The Hill, averaging 11.7 points and 7.7 rebounds while picking up her second career double-double against Stetson on Saturday. For the first time in her career, Elgedawy scored in double figures and shot better than 50 percent from the floor in three consecutive games while continuing to be a force on the offensive glass. Of the Alexandria, Egypt, native’s nine offensive rebounds, seven turned into second-chance points for the Lady Toppers, including four direct putbacks by Elgedawy herself.
Already a three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week winner, Elgedawy has matched the program record in that category held by Tashia Brown, who also earned the weekly honor three times during the 2014-15 campaign.
For the season, Elgedawy is averaging 9.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and has started all 11 games for the Lady Toppers. Of WKU players with 10 or more field goal attempts this season, Elgedawy’s .506 (42-of-83) mark from the floor ranks second only to Ivy Brown, and her seven blocks are also good for the second-best total on the squad. The freshman is one of only two Lady Toppers with multiple double-doubles this season, earning hers against Evansville and Stetson.
Elgedawy and the Lady Toppers will be back in action for the final time before the holiday break on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. (CT) for a critical non-conference matchup at undefeated Ball State. The Cardinals are 10-0 entering Thursday night’s clash, while the Lady Toppers are riding a seven-game winning streak into the matchup.
