Georgetown College women’s basketball played one last non-conference game Tuesday. The Tigers (6-9) traveled to Oakland City, Ind. and picked up their first road win, 65-63, as junior Shelby Beam hit the game winner with one second left.
With 43 seconds left, Alicia Wilson of Oakland City University, made it 63 all with a pair of free throws. GC took a quick shot on the other end, looking for a two for one situation, and it paid off. Martina Lytle grabbed an OCU miss and Georgetown called a timeout with four seconds left, setting up the winning jumper for Beam.
The Tigers now enter Mid-South Conference action, tipping off at 2 pm Saturday against Campbellsville University.
Freshman Michaela Kennedy helped GC stay in the game in the first half with 11 of her team-high 13 points. However in the second half, it was the sharp shooting of junior Abbey Van Zant that gave Georgetown a lead.
She hit a pair of threes to regain leads after OCU had made a run. The home team led by as many as nine in the first half, but Kennedy fueled a 7-0 run to close the half. She started it with a jumper and finished it with a three off a pass from Van Zant.
Van Zant hit a three with 1:06 left in the third quarter to give the visitors the edge heading into the final 10 minutes. She later scored a layup to give GC its largest lead of the game. Her final basket was a three for a 63-61 lead with 2:28 left. Van Zant finished with 11 points.
Justus Martin led the battle on the boards with 10 rebounds, while Lytle added eight.
