Campbellsville’s 15th-ranked men’s basketball team opens Mid-South Conference action against No. 1-ranked Georgetown College on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET inside the Powell Athletic Center.
Campbellsville is entering its conference slate on an 11-game winning streak – which is the longest since the 2014-15 season when it won 15-straight games en route to a 19-1 start. Georgetown is coming into the game winning its first 15 games of the season and is off to its first best start since Chris Briggs took over the program in 2011.
In Campbellsville’s last game, it capped of its non-conference slate with a 122-92 victory over Kentucky Christian University at the University of the Cumberlands Classic. The 122 points scored by Campbellsville is the most points it scored in a game this season. Campbellsville had all 11 players score at least three points against the Knights highlighted by a pair of 20-point scorers in Duke Robinson and Jalen Coates. Robinson recorded a new career high and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field last Saturday.
Coming into 2018, Georgetown and Campbellsville sat at No. 1 and 2 in scoring offense with Georgetown racking up 1,618 points and Campbellsville has scored 1,529 points this season. The pair of Tiger squads are also second and third in made three-pointers with Georgetown making 193 and Campbellsville knocking down 180 through the first 16 games of the year.
Hagen Tyler leads Campbellsville this season with 15.5 points per game this year and he is third in the nation with 51 three-pointers. Andrew Smith and Tim Coleman are second on the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game. Smith is second in the NAIA with 141 rebounds and his 8.8 boards a game lead Campbellsville. Coleman is just behind Tyler with 49 made three-pointers and is fourth in the NAIA.
Since moving into a starting role seven games ago, Smith has averaged a double-double with 15.9 points a game and 11.0 rebounds a game. He has also captured back-to-back Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honors in mid-December.
Georgetown comes into the conference season winning all 15 of its games to start the season and sits atop the national poll. Along with scoring the most points in NAIA Division I, Georgetown has the best scoring margin in the NAIA as it beats opponents by an average of 39.7 points per game and scores an average of 107.9 points a game – which is second in the country.
Leading Georgetown this season has been senior transfer Shadell Millinghaus – who leads the way in points (24.2) and rebounds (9.5). Millinghaus also has recorded a team-best 28 steals, while also ranking third in total scoring with 339 points in the NAIA. Eljay Cowherd leads the nation with 86 assists and Trent Gilbert has notched a national best 68 three-pointers.
Campbellsville and Georgetown have met 126 times since 1964, where Georgetown holds the series advantage, 94-32. Georgetown has won five of the last meetings including the last contest in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament last season. During the postseason last year, Georgetown edged Campbellsville in Frankfort, Kentucky, 75-70. The last Campbellsville victory came on Feb. 18 last year after capturing a narrow 77-76 win on the road over Georgetown.
Tipoff on Saturday is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday from the Powell Athletic Center for the Mid-South Conference opener for both teams.
