Freshman guard Khaliah Herbert stepped up in a time of need as she drained a go-ahead jumper with two seconds left in regulation to push Kentucky State University women’s basketball past Paine College, 69-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Heal Complex.

“It wasn’t easy, but we figured out a way to close it out,” said head coach Terrance Slater. “I’m proud of our fight, but we have to play better down the stretch. We will take a day off and get back to work on Monday.”

The Thorobrettes (4-11, 4-4) have won two of their last three games, as they venture into a three-game stretch against SIAC west division opponents over the next and a half. The Lady Lions (0-11, 0-6) have yet to win a game this season, and of the 11 losses, only two of them have been decided by less than 10 points.

KSU began to pull away in the second quarter, with a 16-3 run after being tied at 15-15. PC stayed at a distance until the fourth quarter when momentum flipped in the home squad’s favor. As KSU led 65-48 with just under eight minutes to play, the Lady Lions proceeded to go on a 19-2 run, bringing the game to a 67-67 tie with only 25 seconds remaining. After a coach Slater timeout, KSU ran down the clock to two seconds finding Herbert for only her second made bucket of the day, finishing with five points to secure the win for the green and gold.

Fellow freshman, forward Erica Jones collected her second double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Her last double-double came on Dec. 2 against Lane College.

Junior guard Lyndsey Downing continues to set the pace for the Thorobrettes at the point guard position with 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Downing’s performance marked her third game over the last four where she has scored double-digit points.

KSU will have a full six days before they take on Tuskegee University on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Exum Center; the tip is slated for 1:00 pm ET.
