— To begin 2018, the Kentucky Wesleyan College Department of Athletics may have its biggest upgrade since the announcement of the move to the Great Midwest Athletic
Conference five years ago. Steele Stadium will have a new turf surface, thanks to community partner Independence Bank, who has made a sizable contribution to the project.
“This is a big move for us and one that we feel will have many positive outcomes in the future,” said Director of Athletics Rob Mallory. “This is a project that will help us become more integrated with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II, but most importantly our proud community of Owensboro. We are trying to increase the scholar-athlete experience and do our best to give them quality facilities to practice and compete in.”
Capital projects always signify growth at any small private institution around the country. Over the course of the last year, Kentucky Wesleyan College has not only upgraded its athletic facilities, but has improved its perception and visibility in the community.
“Partners like Independence Bank are critical to Kentucky Wesleyan College as we continue
transforming our campus facilities for our students,” said Associate AD for External
Operations Brad Moore. “We are grateful to the Reid family for this generous gift, which will add to the state-of- the-art digital scoreboard at Steele Stadium.”
Independence Bank has been a strong community partner in Owensboro, and this is just another example of their commitment to building strong relationships with both institutions. “This investment is a testimony to the strength of our partnership with Kentucky Wesleyan and Owensboro Catholic Schools,” said Independence Bank President Darrell Higginbotham. “The condition of the field had deteriorated and both schools were in need of a community partner.
Independence Bank’s investment will benefit both institutions, our community and represents a core philosophy to seek ways to make a difference in the communities we serve.” The joint project with Owensboro Catholic High School, who also uses the facility, is expected to take around four to six weeks to complete upon start date, dependent upon weather. It is possible that the project would be completed in time for the 2018 season home opener.
“It’s great to see the football program take the next step in facilities,” said Head Coach Brent Holsclaw. “It’s an indicator of the college’s commitment to building all programs. Any time there is a facility upgrade, it has an impact on recruiting. It shows that we are continuing to grow and develop. The main advantage is the number of hours you can be on a playing surface for spring football, additional practice times and inclement weather.”
