Thomas More Wrestling Finishes Eighth at Sparta Mat Classic

The Thomas More College wrestling team finished eighth and six Saints placed today (Saturday, January 13, 2017) at the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University at the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena in North Manchester, Indiana.

First-year Jimmy Murphy (Milford, Ohio/Milford) placed third at 125. He opened with a 7-1 decision win, but fell 16-1 by technical fall before he had an 8-4 decision, a pin 2:51 and a won by default in the third place match. Sophomore James Caniglia (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) placed fourth in 197 as he had a 14-2 major decision win, a pin in 50-seconds, a 9-8 decision loss and an 8-2 decision win before losing by default in the third place match.

Sophomore Avery Jones (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) finished fifth at 184 as he had a pin in 2:09 and 57-seconds to go along with a 14-12 decisions before a 14-2 major decision loss and a 5-3 decision long, but won the fifth place match by forfeit. Sophomore Andrew Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was fifth at 165 as he had a 12-2 major decision loss before rolling off a 7-5 decision win, a pin in 2:21, a 10-3 decision, 17-1 technical fall, 10-4 decision and a no contest in the fifth place match.

First-year Tanner Yenter (California, Ky./Campbell County) finished sixth in 133 with a pin in 2:59, a 1-0 decision loss, an 11-6 decision win and a 7-3 decision win before a 4-0 decision loss and an 8-0 major decision loss in the fifth place match. Sophomore Tyler Sarreshteh (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty-Benton) placed eighth at 133 as he had a pin in 2:43 and 1:54, but had a 19-2 technical fall loss, and a 7-3 decision loss before falling by pin in the seventh place match.

Tallying 1-2 records at the tournament was sophomore Parker Buschelman (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) at 141, first-yer Andrew Tevis (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) at 149, first-year Jimmy Traub (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) at 157 and first-year Gunnar Dawson (Madison, Ohio/Madison) at 165.

Thomas More returns to action on Friday (January 19) when it hosts Waynesburg University in its 2017-18 home opener. The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) dual match is scheduled to begin at p.m. inside the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
