The 23 turnovers top the previous season-high of 17 which CU recorded against Simmons College and Alice Lloyd in the fall semester.
Georgetown’s (20-3, 5-3 MSC) Shadell Millinghaus and Eljay Cowherd both dropped 18 points, while Millinghaus carded a double-double with 12 rebounds off the bench.
Campbellsville’s (18-6, 3-5 MSC) Jalen Coates came off the bench to lead the Tigers with 12 points, while Jacob King registered 11 – six of those coming at the free throw line and two points off his career-high.
The difference maker tonight was the 3-point shot and free throws. Georgetown finished hitting 8-of-19 (42%) from deep and 16-of-20 (80%) from the charity stripe. In comparison, CU hit 4-of-20 from the 3-point line and 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
CU did win the battle on the glass, 39-32, and finished with 12 offensive rebounds, but the Tigers could only capitalize with eight second-chance points.
CU started the contest cool as ice, hitting 2-of-7 to start and Georgetown taking a 9-4 lead. Simpson Anderson ended the cold spurt with a 3 off the bench and the Tigers kept the deficit at two, 19-17, at the first media timeout.
With 7:46 left in the first half, Andrew Smith capitalized on an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull CU within two points again, 26-24, but Georgetown finished the half on 15-4 run. Quan Poindexter drilled a 3 to cap the run and put GC ahead, 41-28.
In the second half, Georgetown started on an 8-0 run and extended its lead back to 19 points, 49-30. But Campbellsville answered right back with a 13-4 run, including a Shawn Johnson 3, and cut the deficit back to 10, 53-43, forcing Georgetown to call a timeout.
Georgetown responded again, though. Troy Steward drilled his only 3 of the night to cap a 8-0 run for GC and pushed the lead back to 18 points, 61-43.
Campbellsville was able to cut the lead to 13 points with 2:33 left but Georgetown ended the game on a mini 5-0 run.
Campbellsville’s road doesn’t get any easier as it will now return to the Powell Athletic Center on Thursday, Feb. 8 to host No. 25 Life University at 8 p.m. ET. The Tigers will also host No. 21 University of the Cumberlands on Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
