Trio of Louisville Cardinals Named to All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team

University of Louisville senior Tim Kubel, junior Adrien Cabon and junior Tate Schmitt were named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team announced Thursday by the ACC.

A four-time All-ACC Academic Team selection and a native of Stuttgart, Germany, Kubel completed his degree in finance in December before being selected in the second round of the 2018 Major League Soccer Super Draft by Toronto FC. Cabon, who hails from Lyon, France, is majoring in sport administration, while Schmitt, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree majoring in marketing.

Kubel concluded his final collegiate season as a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, semifinalist for MAC Hermann Trophy and All-ACC First Team honoree scoring six goals with seven assists in 19 matches. He was also named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team and was a TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Second Team honoree. He scored 21 goals and had a school record 26 assists in 82 matches during four collegiate seasons and capped his career at Louisville as a two-time All-American, two-time Scholar All-American, four-time All-ACC selection and a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist.

Cabon scored three goals and added four assists while playing in all 20 matches for No. 7 Cardinals in 2017, including 19 total starts. He delivered a pair of goals in the season-opening win against UC Irvine and added his third career goal in 3-2 win against San Francisco in second round of NCAA Championship.

Schmitt earned All-ACC Second Team honors and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Third Team accolades while scoring a team-leading nine goals with three assists during in 2017. He started all 20 matches for the No. 7 Cardinals scoring four game-winning goals, including the clinching goals in NCAA Championship wins against San Francisco and Colgate. In three collegiate seasons, Schmitt has 21 career goals with nine assists in 61 total matches, including 55 starts.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

The Cardinals closed the 2017 season with a 13-2-5 record following a 4-3 shootout loss to Akron in an NCAA Championship quarterfinal match at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Under Lolla’s guidance, Louisville reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last eight years.

Season tickets for the 2018 University of Louisville soccer season will go on sale Feb. 6 through the Louisville Cardinals Ticket Office. Reserved chairback tickets is priced at $100 for adults, $320 for the Family Four Pack and $80 for faculty/staff. General admission/berm seating is priced at $50 for adults, $200 for the Family Four Pack and $50 for faculty/staff.

Season tickets packages include all UofL men’s and women’s soccer regular season matches at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Additional information regarding 2018 Louisville soccer season tickets will be available soon, including details on special early bird pricing from Feb. 6-22.
