EKU MEN’S BASKETBALL SET TO HOST RADFORD ON SATURDAY

Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team will host Radford University on Saturday.

The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.  The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

Eastern Kentucky’s 1971-72 NCAA Tournament team will be honored during halftime of the game against Radford.

INSIDE THE SERIES

–  The all-time series between the teams is tied 1-1.  The first meeting between came on Nov. 18, 2012.  The Colonels earned an 83-75 victory in a Comfort Suites Invitational game played at Baptist Health Arena in Richmond.  The most recent meeting came on Nov. 28, 2021 with Radford winning, 88-75, on its home court. 

–  In last year’s game, Braxton Beverly hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-best 17 points for EKU.  Jannson Williams scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked five shots.  Michael Moreno had 12 points and seven boards.  Bryan Hart finished with 15 points to lead the Highlanders.

THE COLONELS

–  EKU fell to 5-6 after dropping a close game at Northern Kentucky, 64-61, on Wednesday.

–  The Colonels tied the game against NKU at 61-61 on Tayshawn Comer’s 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:04 remaining.  The Norse scored the final three points of the game.

–  Devontae Blanton led Eastern Kentucky with a game-best 23 points against Northern Kentucky.

–  Eastern Kentucky leads the ASUN in scoring at 83.45 points per game.  The Colonels are also first in blocked shots (4.64/game), steals (10.36/game) and turnover margin (+4.18).

–  Three Colonels rank among the top-15 in the conference in steals.  Cooper Robb (1.73/game) is third, Tayshawn Comer (1.55/game) is seventh and Blanton (1.36/game) is tied for 11th.

–  Isaiah Cozart is first in the ASUN with 1.55 blocks per game.  He had three blocks at NKU on Wednesday.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

–  Radford is 6-5 this season after falling at Virginia Commonwealth, 70-62, on Wednesday.  The Highlanders won three straight over Elon, North Carolina Central and George Washington before losing their last two to VMI and VCU.  

–  Kenyon Giles came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points against VCU.  DaQuan Smith finished with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field.

–  Radford was out-rebounded 40-27 at VCU.  The Highlanders attempted 12 more shots thanks to 15 steals that led to 25 VCU turnovers.

–  Giles, a 5-foot-11 freshman guard, leads the team with an average of 12.3 points per game and is hitting on 47 percent of his shots from the field.  He has only started five of 11 games.

–  Shaquan Jules, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, is the Highlanders’ top rebounder at 6.4 boards per game.
