The Murray State women’s basketball team had a strong performance from junior Katelyn Young, but couldn’t overcome the hot-shooting Drake Bulldogs in a 80-67 loss on Sunday at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Young had a monster game for the Racers, setting a season-high with 28 points in the first half, and finishing the game with a career-high 43 points, which is the third most points scored by a Racer in program history. Her scoring output tied the program record of 19 field goals set by Joi Scott in 2006. Young also had 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Despite Young’s efforts, the Racers were unable to hold off the Bulldogs in the second half. Drake shot a blistering 61.3 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, making 19-of-31 field goal attempts. This gave the Bulldogs the edge to secure the win.
On the boards, the Racers were able to out-rebound the Bulldogs, 38-35 in the contest. Hannah McKay led Murray State with 11 rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Racers will look to bounce back with a win over rival Belmont on Wednesday. The game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. at the CFSB Center and will air nationally on ESPN+ as part of the Missouri Valley Conference’s “The Valley on ESPN” package. With a strong performance from Young in this game, Racers will hope to carry the momentum in the next game to secure a win.
