The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team is a force to be reckoned with on the court. The Colonels are currently leading the conference and are ranked fifth in the country in rebounds, averaging 40.68 rebounds per game. The team’s performance has been impressive, with a shooting percentage of 47% from the field and 42% from 3-point range, as well as out-rebounding their opponents by 7.8 boards per game. Additionally, the Colonels have been distributing the ball well, handing out 65 assists on 90 made field goals, which is an assist on 72% of the team’s baskets. As a result, EKU is currently ranked 23rd in the nation with 16.6 assists per game.
One of the team’s standout players, Michael Moreno, is also making a name for himself on the national level. Moreno is eighth in the nation with 63 three-pointers and 19th with a 44.4 three-point percentage. Moreno’s 11 three-pointers against Boyce broke the program record of 10 and are tied for the most in a game by a Division I player this season. Moreno also recently became the 37th member of EKU’s 1,000-point club and earned a spot on the Preseason All-ASUN Team as selected by the league’s head coaches. Moreno was also voted as ASUN Preseason Player of the Year by fans.
EKU’s 2022 recruiting class is also one to watch, being ranked as high as 65th in the country by 247Sports, higher than such programs as Kansas St., Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Mississippi St., and North Carolina St. Additionally, CBB Nation rated three Colonels among the top eight freshmen in the ASUN, with Leland Walker being ranked first, Tayshawn Comer third, and Turner Buttry fourth.
The Colonels’ probable starters for their next game are as follows: Tayshawn Comer (G), Cooper Robb (G), Devontae Blanton (W), Michael Moreno (F), and Isaiah Cozart (F). Comer, a freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana, averages 6.3 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game, and 4.1 assists per game. Robb, a senior from Georgetown, Kentucky, averages 8.4 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 2.0 assists per game. Blanton, a junior from Macedonia, Ohio, averages 15.5 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 2.9 assists per game. Moreno, a junior from Georgetown, Kentucky, averages 13.1 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game, and 1.8 assists per game. Lastly, Cozart, a senior from Richmond, Kentucky, averages 8.1 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game, and 0.4 assists per game.
