Though the Louisville men’s basketball team has been struggling as of late, losing 10 straight games. However, there may be hope on the horizon as they have added a new member to their roster and several players have stepped up their game.
On January 19th, Louisville welcomed freshman forward/center Emmanuel Okorafor to the team. Okorafor, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, arrived from NBA Academy Africa and made his college debut at Notre Dame on Saturday, contributing eight points, five rebounds, and one block in 18 reserve minutes.
Redshirt freshman guard/forward Mike James has also been a bright spot for the Cardinals. Over the last seven games, James has been averaging 14.6 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting an impressive 47% from the field and 50% from beyond the 3-point line. This is a marked improvement from his early season performance where he averaged just 6.9 points and shot 44% overall and 31% from 3-point range.
Senior guard El Ellis has also been on a tear, averaging 18.6 points, 5.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals over the last 12 games. As of Monday, he was one of only 21 players in the nation with at least 360 points and 100 assists this season. After having a positive or even assist-to-turnover ratio just three times in the first nine games of the season, Ellis has been positive or even in 10 of the last 12 games.
Senior forward Sydney Curry has also been improving, averaging 8.3 points and 6.2 rebounds over the last 12 games while shooting 58% overall. He set a new career-high with 19 rebounds against Florida A&M, the most by a Cardinal since Luke Whitehead grabbed 19 boards against Marquette on January 31, 2004.
Sophomore forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield has been out with a foot injury for the last four games but leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and is averaging 7.5 points per contest.
With these new additions and improved performances, Louisville hopes to turn their fortunes around and end their losing streak.
