In a resounding victory, WKU women’s basketball asserted its dominance on Friday night in E.A. Diddle Arena, securing a commanding 97-39 win over West Virginia State. The triumph marked the largest margin of victory for WKU since a 64-point triumph against Alabama A&M on Nov. 11, 2016.
Head coach Greg Collins expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting, “I felt like our girls came focused and ready to play.” He emphasized the team’s focus on improving consistency, addressing stretches in previous games that hindered their chances of victory. The strategy centered on being more intentional and purposeful, fostering a stronger sense of teamwork.
A remarkable aspect of the game was the extensive involvement of the WKU roster, with all 11 players seeing action and contributing points. Five players achieved double figures, showcasing the team’s depth and balance. Notably, eight players reached or tied career highs in various statistical categories, while nine players achieved or tied season highs. The team collectively recorded season highs in 10 different statistical areas.
Destiny Salary emerged as the standout performer, setting a new career high with 25 points in just her fourth game as a Lady Topper. Impressively, she scored 21 points in the first half and played only five minutes in the second half. The performance earned her the distinction of being the first WKU player to score 20 points in a half since December 30, 2021.
The freshman trio of Nevaeh Foster (14 points), Jailynn Brill (13 points), and Mackenzie Chatfield (10 points) also shone, each achieving double-digit scoring for the first time in their collegiate careers. Brill displayed perfect accuracy, going 6-of-6 from the field.
On the boards, Aaliyah Pitts led WKU with a career-high 10 rebounds, while Karris Allen notched a career-high of nine rebounds in less than eight minutes of play. Teresa Faustino contributed a career-high eight assists during the game.
The Lady Toppers’ offensive prowess was evident, with 97 points – the most in regulation since December 30, 2021. The team’s rebounding dominance was also showcased, securing 54 boards – the most since February 5, 2021. Furthermore, the 26 assists recorded were the most since November 21, 2021.
The game’s narrative unfolded with Salary initiating the scoring with a three-pointer, setting the tone for WKU’s 8-0 run and an 11-2 lead. The Lady Toppers continued their dominance, outscoring West Virginia State 25-0 in the second quarter, solidifying their lead.
While West Virginia State made attempts to rally in the third quarter, WKU responded with resilience, maintaining control and extending their lead. The Lady Toppers showcased their depth in the final quarter, with non-starters contributing all 18 points.
With this resounding victory, WKU women’s basketball looks ahead to their Conference USA opener at Liberty on Saturday, January 6, at 1:00 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
