Kentucky senior Marshall Gei has been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Gei is just the fourth player in school history to receive the honor, joining Collin Cowgill (2006 and 2008), Austin Cousino (2014) and Dustin Beggs (2016).
The honor recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Gei, a fifth-year catcher from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average during his undergraduate career, earning a degree in medical physics. He currently is working toward his graduate degree in medical physics with an emphasis on radiation science. As part of his curriculum he spends time at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center working with patients.
A former bullpen catcher, Gei worked his way into playing time and has appeared in 32 games this season with 27 starts behind the plate. He also has been honored as the UK Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and an inductee into the prestigious Frank G. Ham Society of Character. He’s a four-time Southeastern Conference Honor Roll member and two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe academic honors.
