Anna DeBeer had a season-high 19 kills as the No. 3-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team fell 1-4 to No. 8-ranked Ohio State University on Sunday afternoon at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
UofL hit .248 as a team with nine aces and four blocks. Claire Chaussee finished with 13 kills and one ace and Elena Scott had 20 digs. Raquel Lazaro led the team with 35 assists. Ohio State hit .372 with four aces and five blocks. Four Buckeyes had double-digit kills.
DeBeer and Chaussee were named to the Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend on Friday versus Purdue for the first match of the Louisville Invitational.
Set 1
It was back-and-forth to begin the match between Louisville and Ohio State. The Cards took a three-point lead with back-to-back blocks from Amaya Tillman. The Buckeyes battled back with aggressive serving to tie the score 5-5. A kill from Tilman and an error from the Buckeyes pushed the score to 10-6. Ohio State brought the game within one point with a kill from Jenaisya Moore. UofL held the momentum into the media timeout with a service ace from Ayden Bartlett to make the score 15-11. With an sold-out crowd behind them, the Cardinals extend the score to 18-15 with a kill from DeBeer. An ace from DeBeer forced the Buckeyes to use their first timeout at 20-16. The Cardinals take the first set 25-17 on back-to-back aces from Ceci Rush. DeBeer led UofL with six kills hitting .600 and one ace.
Set 2
In the second set, Ohio State jumped out to a 4-1 lead with kills from Rylee Rader and Moore. The Cards tied the score 5-5 with team defense and a crafty play by Tillman. A block from Cara Cresse and Lazaro gave UofL a one point lead at 7-6. The game continued with several one point lead changes until Ohio State pulled ahead 15-11 heading into the media timeout. The Buckeyes extended the score to 17-11 forcing UofL to use its first timeout. A kill from Rader makes the Cardinals call their second timeout at 20-13. The Buckeyes won the second set 25-15 with a kill from Emily Londot.
Set 3
The third set started with a strong team play from the Cards. A big kill from Tillman brought the Cardinals within on to make the score 5-4. Back-to-back kills from Cresse and Chaussee to tie the score 8-8. The Cards took the lead for the first time this set with an error from Ohio State. The momentum shifted for Louisville as they pulled ahead 12-9 making Ohio State call a timeout. The Buckeyes tied the score 13-13 with a kill from Mac Podraza. Ohio State retook the lead 15-13 causing the Cardinals to call a timeout. A kill from DeBeer brought the score within two. The Buckeyes extended the score to 20-18. Nena Mbonu got the crowd fired up with a kill to put the Cards within one at 21-20. With a dump from Lazaro and an error from the Buckeyes, the score was tied 23-23. Ohio State takes the third set 25-23.
Set 4
UofL won the first point of the set, but the Buckeyes answered back with a four point run. Back-to-back kills from the Cardinals brought the score within one at 5-4. An ace from Tillman gives Louisville the lead at 7-6. A massive kill from Mbonu brought energy and gave the Cards a one point advantage. Ohio State led 15-12 into the media timeout. Chaussee tooled the block to put the score to 17-15 Ohio State. UofL called a timeout down 19-16. An ace from Kylie Murr pushed the score to 21-16, timeout Cardinals. Three kills from Moore give the Buckeyes match point. Ohio State won the match 25-17.
