UKTF Women Open NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships with Record Performances

The University of Kentucky track and field women’s team kicked off their NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships this evening at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, with notable performances and new records.

Kate Powers Shines in Hammer Throw

Freshman Kate Powers set the tone for the Wildcats with an outstanding performance in the hammer throw. Powers, who has consistently improved throughout the season, shattered her own freshman record for the fourth time this outdoor season. Her best throw of 215’7” (65.72 meters) not only placed her ninth in her first NCAA Outdoor Championships but also elevated her to third on the UK all-time performers list.

Payton Phillips Scores in Pole Vault

Junior Payton Phillips continued the Wildcats’ strong start by scoring half a point for the team in her NCAA Outdoor Championships debut. The Georgia native matched her personal best with a clearance of 14’1.25” (4.30 meters), tying for eighth place in the competition. Phillips was the only Wildcat to earn points for the team on the opening day.

Challenges on the Track

Despite the early successes, the Wildcats faced challenges on the track. The team had unsatisfactory finishes in the 400 meters, 800 meters, and the 4×400 meter relay, resulting in no additional points. The Wildcats ended the day tied for 33rd overall in the team standings with 0.5 points.

Upcoming Events

Senior Charity Hufnagel will begin her quest for a gold medal in the heptathlon tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. ET. Additionally, junior Luke Brown will compete in the triple jump at 9:20 p.m. ET, aiming for a spot on the podium.

The Wildcats are hopeful for strong performances in the coming events to climb higher in the team standings.
