Deuce Dat Dude!!! Two-Sport Star Propels Bowling Green to 2025 Sweet 16 Final

Deuce Bailey is no stranger to the spotlight in big games. A senior at Bowling Green High School, he’s already etched his name into Purples lore as a quarterback who led the football team to three straight finals, winning back-to-back Class 5A state titles in 2023 and 2024. But in March 2025 Deuce swapped his cleats for sneakers and proved he’s just as clutch on the hardwood, guiding the Bowling Green Purples to the KHSAA Sweet 16 championship game at Rupp Arena with a series of unforgettable performances, including a game-winning layup in overtime during the tournament’s opening round.

A Two-Sport Phenom
Bailey’s athletic résumé is the stuff of legend. As a quarterback, the Missouri State signee threw for over 3,500 yards and 46 touchdowns in his senior football season, earning Class 5A championship MVP honors in a 37-20 win over Cooper in December 2024 at Kroger Field. Just three months later, he was back in Lexington, this time at Rupp Arena, showcasing his basketball chops. A two-sport standout, Bailey averaged 10.8 points per game as a junior for the Purples’ basketball squad and elevated his play in 2025, proving his versatility and competitive fire translate seamlessly between the gridiron and the court.

Overtime Heroics in Round One
The Purples’ magical run began against Adair County in the Sweet 16’s opening game, and it was Bailey who set the tone. With Bowling Green trailing 51-50 in overtime, the senior guard took matters into his own hands. With 9 seconds left, he exploited a mismatch, drove the lane, and finished with a contested layup to secure a 52-51 victory. “I saw a mismatch I liked, and I just took the lane. When I got there, everything opened up, and I had an open layup,” Bailey said post-game, his calm demeanor masking the pressure of the moment.

Quarterfinal Clutch
Bailey’s heroics didn’t stop there. In the quarterfinals on March 28, he faced Ashland Blazer in another overtime thriller. Down 11 points in the second quarter, Bowling Green clawed back, and Bailey delivered again. He tied the game at 67-67 with a driving layup late in regulation, forcing extra time. In overtime, he sparked a 9-0 run with a steal and a score, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in an 80-74 win. His ability to take over in crunch time propelled the Purples to their first semifinal appearance since their 2017 title.

Semifinal Grit
Facing South Oldham in the semifinals, Deuce kept the Purples’ dream alive, scoring 15 points, including a key 3-pointer in the third quarter that cut a 10-point deficit to four, fueling a comeback. Bowling Green took the lead late, and Bailey’s defense on South Oldham’s guards helped seal a 68-64 victory. His all-around game showcased his leadership as the Purples punched their ticket to the championship game.

Championship Heart
In the final against Great Crossing on March 29, Bailey and the Purples faced a tall task against Mr. Kentucky Basketball Malachi Moreno and a dominant Warhawks squad. Bailey scored 10 points, adding four rebounds and two assists, and his presence kept the Purples competitive.

Legacy Cemented
Bailey’s Sweet 16 stat line, 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game across four contests, earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team as his leadership lifted Bowling Green to a 31-7 record and their deepest run in eight years. Coach D.G. Sherrill said after the final. “Deuce showed this state what he’s about.”

For Bailey, the runner-up finish capped a high school career defined by excellence in two sports. As he heads to Missouri State to play quarterback, Kentucky fans will remember him as the two-sport star who brought Bowling Green within one win of Sweet 16 glory, with that overtime dagger against Adair County echoing as a highlight of his hardwood legacy.
