UK’s Anderson, Reed Nominated for SEC’s Boyd McWhorter Scholarship

Bowen Anderson of the Kentucky swimming and diving team and Katie Reed of the Wildcat softball program have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Kentucky.The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.The Southeastern Conference will name the 2019 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 25.Highlights of Kentucky’s nominees include:BOWEN ANDERSON, Swimming and Diving, KentuckyMajor: Biology

  • Pre-med student, he has a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average with a major in Biology
  • Freestyle specialist who has top times of 1:39.65 in the 200 free, 4:25.91 in the 500 free, 9:27.10 in the 1000 free and 1:47.17 in the 200 butterfly
  • Olympic Trials qualifier in the 400 free, 2016
  • On his path to medical school, he has done shadowing at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Facial and Reconstruction Surgery, Neurosurgery, Sports Medicine/Orthopedics and Family Medicine
  • Also did volunteer work and shadowing in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital
  • Member of Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership and honor society
  • Elected to UK Athletics’ Frank G. Ham Society of Character, 2018
  • Recipient of University of Kentucky Heritage Scholarship, 2015-2019
  • College of Arts and Science Dean’s List every semester at UK
  • Received the Swimming and Diving Team award for highest GPA
  • Red Cross certified for first aid, CPR and lifeguard

KATIE REED, Kentucky, SoftballMajor: Human Health Sciences

  • Headed to dental school, she is an All-America shortstop on the field and has a 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom
  • SEC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 2018
  • One of three national finalists – across all sports and divisions – for the NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship
  • 2017 All-American and a three-year All-SEC honoree
  • Remarkable combination of offensive production and defensive prowess
  • Has started every game of her four years, with a career batting average of .345, 18 home runs, 111 RBI and 55 stolen bases
  • Has been on ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 four times for amazing plays at shortstop and has been named to the SEC All-Defensive Team
  • Finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, 2019
  • Elected as team captain three years, has led the team to three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCAA Super Regionals
  • President of UK’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helping lead an initiative for an ongoing in-depth partnership with Special Olympics Kentucky
  • Elected to UK Athletics Frank G. Ham Society of Character

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in late May. ‑ GO CATS –For more information, contact:Tony Neely
