The University of Louisville men’s soccer team made great strides in the classroom this year, as the squad posted a spring semester GPA of 3.316, and an overall 3.282 GPA for the 2018-19 school year.

“We continue to strive for excellence in everything we do,” head coach John Michael Hayden said. “As a team we really committed ourselves to improving our academics performance this spring, which is certainly reflective in our overall GPA. I am proud of our guys and their commitment towards success in the classroom.”

The team has now achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher eight consecutive semesters. All total, 16 members of the squad earned Athletic Director’s Honor Roll Recognition for having a 3.00 or better for the term.

“The strong academic performance from the team this spring is an indication of the group we have right now,” rising senior midfielder Liam Bennett said. “Everyone wants to be their best both on and off the pitch. Achieving in the classroom is important because we are student-athletes. We are grateful for what we are able to do every day on the pitch, but know that succeeding in the classroom is equally as important. ”

Ten members of the team earned Red & Black Scholar Athlete status for a 3.25 or better cumulative GPA, while 10 were also named to the Dean’s List for spring 2019.

“I feel proud of myself because I managed to drastically improve my GPA through a lot of hard work,” rising junior defenseman William Portman says. “I also feel privileged because it wouldn’t have been possible without all the advice from our coaching staff and especially our academic advisor, Kristia Worthy.”

The Cardinals also had one player named a Dean’s Scholar for earning a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester.

Cody Cochran and Watterson Young earned their UofL degrees in May. Cochran graduated with a Bachelor of Science in sports administration and will return to the team in the fall, while Young earned a Bachelor of Science in finance.
