Murray State Golf Tunes Up For OVC – 3rd At Big Blue Intercollegiate

The Murray State Racers wrapped up their stay at the Big Blue Invitational hosted by Tennessee State University.
The Hermitage Golf Club in Nashville with a third place finish in a field of 13 teams.

The Racers carded scores of 303-295-302=900 and finished three shots from second place Detroit Mercy (887) and 10 from winner UT Martin (880). After the Racers, the rest of the top-10 included Tennessee State (90-4), West Georgia (905), Evansville (909), John A. Logan (918), Tennessee Tech (924), and Green Bay (925).

Austin Knight led the Racers with a sixth place finish on scores of 72-72-74=218, while Matthew Winder had scores of 75-74-74=223. Gabe Wheeler placed 19th after scores of 78074-74=226 and Avery Edwards placed 44th on scores of 79-75-80=234. Matthew Zakutney was 62nd on scores of 78-82-82=242.

Justin Wendling placed 19th overall and second among the eight individuals in the field with scores of 76-75-75=226.

Tournament Notes
Par is indeed a good score. The Racers saw Knight and Winder be part of a tie for fourth place among the players with the most pars in the 54 hole event. They each had 37. Wheeler and Wendling each 35 pars and were ninth for total pars.

The Racers now have nine top-10 individual finishes in the 2016-17 season. Knight has three, while Edwards, Winder and Zakutney all have two each. Knight leads the team with three top-5 finishes.

The field of 60 players produced an average score of 78.03 in round one, 77.12 in round two and 76.33 in round three.

The Racers have now posted a third and second place finish at the TSU event in the last two seasons.

The President’s Preserve course played to a par-72 and at a length of 7,044 yards.

UTM’s Hunter Richardson was the medalist with scores of 75-69-69=213, two shots ahead of Evansville’s Tyler Gray (71-70-74=215).

TSU’s Jermey Fultz had the low around of the event with a 6-under 66 in round two.
