Murray State Baseball’s Gutzler Named NCBWA Second Team All-American

Murray State’s Brandon Gutzler received more accolades Wednesday afternoon for his prolific 2017 campaign as he was named Second Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

The junior outfielder from St. Louis, had one of the best offensive seasons in program history as he hit .353 with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, 17 doubles and 57 runs scored. The 16 homers and 71 ribbies are both the second most for a single season in MSU history while the 57 runs are the fifth-best mark all time.

In May, Gutzler was named First Team All-OVC after he led the Racers with 24 multi-hit and 19 multi-RBI games this past season. He also began the season with a 44-game on-base streak, which was the longest in the nation at the time it ended.

Gutzler becomes just the third student-athlete in program history to be named an NCBWA All-American and the first since Wes Cunningham received third team honors back in 2010. Daniel Calhoun was also named to the third team in 2009.
