McCracken Co. Defeats Wayne County in Boy’s Sweet 16

On the second day of the Whitaker Bank KHSAA Kentucky Boy’s Sweet Sixteen McCracken County(25-8) faced Wayne County(31-2) and defeated them 81 to 74.  After the first period McCracken was up 22 18 and never looked back going into halftime with a 34-28 lead and went up by 11 at one point even with 13 turnovers for the game.Wayne County never led due to 25% first half shooting and 1 for 11 behind the 3 point arc while McCracken County shot 45% from the field and 57% from behind the 3 point stripe at half. Wayne lead points in the paint in the first half with 12 scoring 7 points off of McCracken’s turnovers and 6 points on second chance buckets. Mc Cracken Scored 8 points in the paint during the first half.

First half scoring leaders for Wayne County were #20 Trey Blevins with 8 as well ass #14 Peyton Woods and #23 Corey Stearns ptiching in 6 points apiece for the Cardinals. For McCracken Count #22 Caleb Stonecipher led all scorers with 11 and grabbing 4 boards. Other McCracken County scoring leaders at half were #3 Jared Burnett with 7, #10 Kam Chumbler and #20 Jason Armstrong pitched in 6 points apiece.

As for the second half Wayne County matched McCracken scoring 18 points in the period but could never seem to get close enough to put pressure on McCracken County. Wayne County shot 46% from the field in the second half and 33% behind the 3 point mark. McCracken County shot 57% from the field and 25% from the 3 point arc while shooting 51% for the game. McCracken County outrebounded Wayne County 41 to 32 for the game.

Leading scorers for McCracken County were #3 Jared Burnett who poured in 23 shooting 7-10 from the field and 8-10 from the free throw stripe. Aslo helping McCracken’s cause were #22 Caleb Stonecipher with 20 points and 6 rebounds and #10 Kam Chumbler who had 19 points and 6 boards. Forward Bryce Rodgers #54 wiped the glass with 10 boards himself.

Wayne County’s top performers were #20 Trey Blevins with 24 points, #14 Peyton Woods with 17 and #10 Jason Perkins with 13 points and 3 boards. Center #25 Nick Gillespie had 11 total rebounds in which 6 were offensive. Wayne County looked impressive and scored 34 points from the foul line shooting 79 % to help them stay ahead and not look back.

McCracken County moves on and will play Saturday at 6:30 pm against the winner of Knott County Central and the Bowling Green Purples game being held this afternoon.
