EKU Baseball Drops Both Games At Morehead

The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team homered four times, but could not get out of Morehead with a win as it dropped both games in the series ending double header against Morehead State at Allen Field on Saturday.

The Colonels fell behind early in game one as MSU scored in the bottom of the first, and added two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0 after three innings. In the top of the fourth Ben Fisher put EKU on the board with a two-run homer that scored Cornell Nixon and put Eastern within one, 3-2.

The Eagles used a three-run bottom of the fourth to extend their lead. Fisher would single in a run in the top of the seventh, and launched another two run home run in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as EKU fell 9-6.

Fisher notched five RBIs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Nixon also had three hits while scoring two runs.

EKU (13-12, 1-5 OVC) found itself in an 11-0 hole in the top of the fourth, but a Daniel McFarland grounder scored Nixon, and Shea Sullivan homered in an attempt to mount a comeback. A scoreless bottom of the fourth for MSU gave way to Cole Warrenfeltz launching his first home run of the season in the top of the fifth to cut into the deficit, 11-3.

Morehead (17-6, 8-1 OVC) added a run each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, and two runs in the seventh to take a 15-3 lead into the eighth.

Fisher sent a three-run shot over the right field wall in the eighth, his 13th home run of the season, to cut into the lead, and Taylor Blair blasted his first home run of the year in the ninth, but it was too little, too late, as EKU lost 18-7.

Shea Sullivan’s home run was his third of the season, a new career high for the senior.

The Colonels head Huntington, West Virginia, to take on Marshall in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
