Thomas More Softball Splits With Wilmingto

The Thomas More College softball team earned a split with traditional rival Wilmington College today (Thursday, March 23, 2017) in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Wilmington won game one, 4-3, but the Saints won nightcap 11-2 in five innings.

With the split, the Saints are 9-5 and the Quakers are 2-10.

In the first game Thomas More scored three runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, but the Quakers plated four runs in the sixth and held Thomas More scoreless in the sixth and seventh for the 4-3 victory.

The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands), who was three-for-four with two doubles, a run scored and a run batted-in and junior second baseman Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was two-for-four. Junior pitcher Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched seven innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Wilmington scored one in the first to take a 1-0 lead and then Thomas More scored five in the second and six in the third to take an 11-1 lead. The Quakers scored one run in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough as Thomas More earned the 11-2 run-rule victory. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Sprague (Bright, Ind./East Central) earned the win as she pitched five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits.

Three Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior center fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) was two-for-three with a double, two runs scored and three RBI, first-year first baseman Andrea Gahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-two with a double, a home run off the scoreboard, two runs scored and two RBI and first-year right fielder/catcher Amanda Lloyd (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) was two-for-three with a double and two runs scored. First-year catcher Kenzie Dickerson (Union, Ky./Ryle) was one-for-one with a home run.

Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (March 25) when it hosts Wittenberg University at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas More Field.
