The Kentucky men’s swimming and diving team’s season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with the conclusion of the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
In the final race of his collegiate career, senior Kyle Higgins was the lone competitor for the Wildcats on Saturday as he competed in the 200-yard butterfly. The Kentucky record holder in the event, Higgins touched the wall with a time of 1:42.78, just off his school record mark, to finish 21st overall.
“So proud of Kyle and the career he had here at Kentucky,” said head coach Lars Jorgensen. “He has accomplished so much and had a great meet. He just came up a little bit short today in the 200 fly.”
Sophomore Seb Masterton was the only Kentucky athlete to score in the meet as he finished 13th overall in the 1-meter springboard on Thursday to earn the second All-America honorable mention distinction of his career.
“Seb demonstrated great toughness to score in the 1-meter after battling some injuries the last few weeks,” added Jorgensen. “He has a bright future and I’m confident Coach Ted will get him to be even better next year.”
Overall, the Wildcats ended the meet in 37th place as one of 43 schools to have scoring performances. Texas led the pack, earning its third consecutive NCAA title, while California was a distant second.
