Fourth-ranked Louisville Field Hockey stumbles at Cornell

The fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost 2-0 to host Cornell Sunday afternoon at Dodson Field.

In the game, Louisville outshot Cornell 11-6 with an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, but the Big Red held a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners, capitalizing on two of the four to score a pair of goals. Cornell goalkeeper Aerin Park had seven saves in the game, while Louisville’s Sasha Elliott posted three stops.

Cornell (9-6) got on the scoreboard in the fifth minute of the game when Julia Darmon connected on a penalty corner assist from Claire Jones.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals (12-5) amplified their attack, firing off five shots with Park turning back four of them to hold Louisville at bay.

The Cards entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite holding a 6-2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. Louisville was not awarded a penalty corner in the first half, while Cornell earned two and converted on their first opportunity.

The teams continued to battle in the third quarter with Louisville outshooting Cornell 4-1 and owning a 2-1 edge in corners, but Park made three stops to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Elliott also posted a save to stave off a Cornell scoring effort.

Cornell gained some momentum in the fourth quarter with a 3-1 edge in shots and took advantage of their lone corner in the frame to add an insurance goal by Claire Jones.

Louisville had a final scoring opportunity, earning a corner in the final minute of the contest, but the shot landed wide of the cage.

HEAD COACH JUSTINE SOWRY ON THE GAME:

“We put ourselves in a hole in the first quarter and we were unable to recover. Disappointing that we did not play to our standard and our identity. We will always be better collectively and not individually or waiting for something good to happen. We need to watch the film, learn from it and be better moving forward.”
