No. 7 Louisville Field Hockey Defeats Ball State 4-0 on Senior Day

The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team celebrated senior day with a 4-0 win against Ball State Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.

UofL (12-3) got goals from four different players with Aimee Plumb, Rylie Wollerton, Mia Duchars and Chloe Cuzzupe scoring in UofL’s fifth shutout of the season to improve to 12-3. Ball State drops to 7-7 on the season.

The teams played through a scoreless first quarter before Plumb put Louisville on the scoreboard, converting on a penalty stroke for her sixth goal of the season.

Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Ball State 11-0 with BSU goalkeeper Hannah Johnston collecting seven saves in the first half.

Neither team was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the third quarter despite Louisville earning five penalty corners as Johnston stopped three more shots on goal.

The fourth quarter brought a flurry of Louisville goals as the Cards scored three times in a seven-minute span. After a Ball State possession on their end of the field, graduate senior Kelsey McCrudden’s sent a long pass to Rylie Wollerton who was along near Louisville’s attacking circle. The freshman found herself in a 1v1 with Johnston and sent the ball into the cage for her second goal of the season.

Three minutes later, senior Mattie Tabor sent a feed to Mia Duchars who connected on her second goal of the season put Louisville up 3-0.

UofL capped the scoring with 38 seconds left in the game when freshman Chloe Cuzzupe’s registered her first career goal.

Overall, Louisville fired off a season-high 22 shots and earned nine penalty corners. Sasha Elliott had a pair of saves for UofL, while Johnston finished with 10 stops for Ball State.

COACH JUSTINE SOWRY ON THE WIN

“Ball State is a much-improved team, with the new coaching staff. I thought their goalkeeper also played very, very well today. It took a long time, but felt very happy that we kept persisting… made a couple little twists to try and get around the goalkeeper. We played some pretty nice hockey, so definitely cannot complain.”
