EKU MBB Close Out Non-Conference Schedule vs One of Southern Conference’s Best

Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team will conclude the non-conference portion of its 2022-23 schedule on Thursday against the University of North Carolina Greensboro, a program that has played in a national postseason tournament each of the past six full seasons, including the 2018 and 2021 NCAA Tournaments.

The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.  The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

FREE mugs will be given out at the game and an ugly sweater contest will be held.

INSIDE THE SERIES

–  The two teams have met twice, with the Colonels winning both. 

–  The first meeting was on Nov. 28, 1990 in Richmond.  EKU earned a 78-66 win.  The teams met again on Feb. 12, 1992 in Greensboro where Eastern Kentucky won 80-60.

THE COLONELS

–  Eastern Kentucky overcame a four-point halftime deficit and evened its record at 6-6 with a 67-65 victory over Radford on Saturday.

–  In the comeback win over Radford, the Colonels held the Highlanders to 31 percent shooting from the field, including 2-of-10 from 3-point range, in the second half.  The EKU defense also forced nine turnovers in the second period.

–  For the second time in the last three games, freshman Leland Walker led the team in scoring, finishing with 13 points against Radford.

–  Isaiah Cozart posted his first career double-double, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Radford.  He also blocked three shots in a game for the fourth time this season.

–  EKU leads the ASUN, and is 28th in the nation, in scoring at 82.1 points per game.

–  Devontae Blanton tied his season-high with 10 rebounds in the win over Radford.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

–  UNC Greensboro improved to 6-6 after a 120-48 win over Warren Wilson on Sunday.  The Spartans beat Marshall, 75-67, last week and are riding a two-game winning streak.  

–  Keyshaun Langley led six players in double figures with 19 points against Warren Wilson.  Keondre Kennedy recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

–  Kennedy, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg).

–  The Spartans have hit on 42 percent of their shots from the field, but just 33 percent this season from 3-point range.

–  UNC Greensboro averages 6.8 steals per game and its opponents turn the ball over 14.4 times per game.
