Hunter Gilliam’s Explosive Performance Leads Kentucky Baseball to a 13-2 Victory Over Xavier

Kentucky’s Hunter Gilliam delivered a powerful performance against the Xavier pitching staff, smashing two tape-measure home runs, securing six RBIs, and contributing to a 13-2 run-rule victory in eight innings for No. 11 Kentucky. Gilliam’s second home run, and eighth of the season, marked the first walk-off homer at Kentucky Proud Park since the final game of the Covid-shortened 2020 season.

Gilliam’s impressive display began with a 452-foot missile in the first inning, followed by a sacrifice fly, and finally a 409-foot two-run blast in the eighth, contributing to the Cats’ (29-7) Tax Day victory. In total, Gilliam’s homers covered an astonishing 871 feet.

The game was free of drama as the Cats took an early lead by scoring the first six runs. The team’s offense was in full swing, with eight players getting hits and all nine batters reaching base. Redshirt freshman pitcher Travis Smith also made a strong comeback after two weeks off the mound. Shortstop Grant Smith and centerfielder Jackson Gray, who secured three hits, further bolstered the team’s performance with their impressive defensive skills.

With this victory, Kentucky’s record stands at 36-10 over its last 46 games dating back to last season. UK Coach Nick Mingione, in his seventh season, now boasts a 205-136 career record. Under Coach Mingione’s guidance, Kentucky has excelled in non-conference games, posting a 128-38 record, and achieved a 113-16 record against non-Power Five opponents.

In addition to Gilliam’s outstanding performance, several other players had noteworthy contributions. Outfielder Jackson Gray went 3-for-4 with two runs, a walk, and a stolen base, while infielder Emilien Pitre went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and a walk. Pitcher Travis Smith secured his third win of the season.

Kentucky is set to host Texas A&M on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET as they return to SEC play. The radio call will be available on the UK Sports Network (630 AM WLAP, locally) and streamed on SECN+.
