In an exhilarating match-up, the University of Louisville softball team emerged victorious against Western Kentucky with a final score of 3-2 on Wednesday evening. The game took place at the WKU Softball Complex and featured standout performances from several Cardinals players, including Paige Geraghty and Sarah Gordon.

Strong Performances Propel the Cardinals

Paige Geraghty played an impressive game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI to her name. Sarah Gordon also had a stellar showing, hitting a home run and tallying two RBIs. These efforts helped the Cardinals build and maintain a 3-0 lead, ultimately securing their 3-2 win.

Pitchers Taylor Roby and Alyssa Zabala also contributed significantly to the team’s success. Roby (9-5) earned the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out one batter in 4.1 innings. Zabala, on the other hand, earned her second save of the season, keeping the Hilltoppers scoreless on three hits and striking out one in her 2.2 innings of relief.

Key Moments of the Game

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Sarah Gordon hit her seventh home run of the season, putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Paige Geraghty followed up with a two-out double that brought Madison “Pickle” Winkler home, extending Louisville’s lead to 2-0. The Cardinals added another run in the fifth inning when Hannah File doubled, moved to third on a hit by Taylor Roby, and scored on Gordon’s groundout.

The Hilltoppers (23-18) made a valiant effort to come back in the fifth inning with Faith Hege’s two-run single, narrowing the gap to a one-run game. The tension mounted in the seventh when Western Kentucky threatened to score, but Zabala and the Cardinals’ defense managed to retire the next two batters and seal the victory.

With a 29-14 record, the University of Louisville softball team is set to travel to Charlottesville, Virginia, for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series against Virginia, starting Friday.
