Murray State Football Standouts Earn Preseason All-MVFC Honors from Phil Steele Magazine

Five players from the Murray State football team have been recognized with preseason All-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) honors, as announced by nationally respected media outlet Phil Steele Magazine. The athletes earned their accolades on the basis of their remarkable performances, indicating the promise they hold for the upcoming season.

On the offensive line, DJ Jones and Jacob Frye were awarded second-team and fourth-team honors, respectively. Another offensive stalwart, Taylor Shields, also secured a place in the fourth team. From the defensive lineup, Cade Shupperd and Cody Goatley were acknowledged with third-team and fourth-team honors, respectively.

DJ Jones and Jacob Frye have been consistent performers for the Murray State Racers, demonstrating unyielding dedication on the offensive front. Both players started all 11 games in the 2022 season, with Frye registering an impressive run of 29 consecutive games started for the Racers. Frye’s consistency and skill earned him All-Conference second-team honors in the previous season.

Taylor Shields, another offensive standout, will return to the Racers after a fruitful 2022 season. He led the team with 465 receiving yards, 22 catches, and an impressive average of 21.1 yards per catch. His performance won him a spot on the All-Conference second team last season.

On the defensive side, Cody Goatley and Cade Shupperd were key contributors to Murray State’s defensive solidity. Goatley, who was named to the All-Conference Newcomer team, alongside Shupperd, a recipient of All-Conference second team honors, will be back in action this year. Together, the duo accounted for 99 tackles, six sacks, and 16.5 tackles for loss in the 2022 season.

These preseason honors serve as a testament to the talent and tenacity that these five athletes have consistently displayed on the football field. Their recognition augments the anticipation for the upcoming season, as the Murray State Racers prepare to leverage the prowess of these players in their quest for a successful campaign in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
