The Kentucky Wildcats gymnastics team has soared to No. 9 in the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Preseason Rankings, announced on Friday afternoon.
This recognition comes after a historic season for the Wildcats in 2023. In what was the program’s most accomplished year ever, Kentucky secured its second-ever appearance at the national championships and finished the season with a record-high No. 6 ranking.
Unprecedented Accomplishments
The 2023 season for Kentucky gymnastics was truly remarkable. The Wildcats, affectionately nicknamed “Team 49,” achieved several historic firsts:
- Undefeated Home Stand: First undefeated homestand since 1984, marking a significant milestone during Tim Garrison’s tenure as head coach.
- Highest Score Against Alabama: Set a new program record for the highest overall meet score against rival Alabama, further solidifying their dominance.
- New Overall Road Score: Established a new benchmark for overall road meet score at Illinois, securing them a coveted spot in the evening session at the SEC Championships.
- Zero Falls Counted: Became one of only three NCAA DI gymnastics programs to end the season with a perfect record of zero falls counted, showcasing their exceptional consistency and precision.
Looking Ahead to 2024
Head Coach Tim Garrison, entering his 13th season at the helm, leads the Kentucky gymnastics team into its 50th year as a varsity sport at the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats are poised for another exciting season, opening their campaign at the Super 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada, before facing off against top-ranked opponents Auburn and LSU on the road.
The highly anticipated home opener will take place on January 26th at Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, where the Wildcats will host Georgia for Excite Night. Fans can secure their season tickets now through UKAthletics.com, with single-meet tickets becoming available later this month.
