Kentucky Football Adds Transfer QB Gavin Wimsatt from Rutgers

The University of Kentucky football program has secured a major addition to its roster with the acquisition of transfer quarterback Gavin Wimsatt from Rutgers University. Head coach Mark Stoops announced the exciting news on Tuesday, highlighting Wimsatt’s wealth of game experience and talent as significant assets for the Wildcats.

“Gavin brings a valuable combination of skill and experience to our program,” stated Stoops. “His proven track record as a quarterback, coupled with his familiarity with the state of Kentucky, makes him an invaluable addition to our quarterback room.”

Wimsatt, a native of Owensboro, Kentucky, stands at an imposing 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 225 pounds. Returning to his home state after three seasons with the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt brings a wealth of on-field experience and leadership to the Wildcats. Notably, he had previously considered Kentucky during his high school career at Owensboro High School, where he earned accolades as the Kentucky Class 5-A Player of the Year and participated in the prestigious Elite 11 program.

During his high school tenure, Wimsatt showcased his quarterback prowess, amassing impressive statistics with 5,304 passing yards and 62 passing touchdowns. His standout performance on the gridiron earned him recognition as one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation.

Wimsatt’s collegiate journey at Rutgers saw him excel as a true dual-threat quarterback, particularly during his breakout junior season in 2023. Demonstrating his versatility and playmaking ability, he amassed 1,735 passing yards and nine touchdowns while also contributing 497 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground in 13 starts at quarterback. Over the course of his tenure with the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt started 19 games out of 25 appearances, completing 212 of 455 passes for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns. Additionally, he showcased his mobility with 628 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 180 carries, cementing his reputation as a dynamic playmaker on the field.

With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Wimsatt’s addition to the Kentucky football program represents a significant boost to the team’s quarterback depth and overall offensive capabilities.
