Kentucky’s sophomore stud shortstop Katie Reed was named to the 2017 All-Southeastern Conference First Team as part of three award-winning players for the Wildcats by the league office on Wednesday morning. Reed joins Bailey Vick and Alex Martens, who were named to the All-Freshman Team for the 2017 season. Vick was also named to the All-Defensive Team.
The first team honor for Reed is the first of her young career, but the second time that the St. Louis, Missouri native has made the All-SEC postseason list, piggybacking off of her All-Freshman season in 2016. Reed leads Kentucky’s offense with a .354 average on the season and has three home runs and 21 RBI on the season. Reed played all 51 games for Kentucky this season at shortstop and committed just six errors at that spot all season, making some amazing game-saving plays and inning-defining stops in the hole at short.
Reed becomes the eighth player all-time at Kentucky to be named to the All-SEC First Team.
Bailey Vick, a Paducah, Kentucky native hit .343 in the regular season, slapping her way onto the All-SEC award docket for the first time of her career. Vick was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week two times this season in back-to-back weeks in the final week of April and the first week of May. The left fielder was also named to the All-Defensive team, as she currently sports a 1.000 fielding percentage in left field in her 24 attempts to make plays on the ball in left field.
Alex Martens also joins the postseason award list in 2017, as the freshman from McHenry, Illinois earned All-Freshman Team honors, making Kentucky one of just one of two teams with two players on the All-Freshman Team. Martens is currently hitting at a .282 clip with 10 doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI. Martens started all 51 games this season for the Wildcats at second base, and is one of the best two-out hitters for Kentucky in RBI situations.
Kentucky opens the 2017 SEC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. ET against 10th-seeded South Carolina from Lee Stadium in Knoxville. The game will be shown live on the SEC Network with Beth Mowins (pxp), Michele Smith (color) and Holly Rowe (dugout) on the call.
