UK MGOLF’s Euler’s Surge has Wildcats in Hunt with 18 Holes to Play

After a 9-over-par team score on Tuesday, the Kentucky men’s golf team is still in contention and just one shot out of the top five heading into the final day of competition at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. The team is in sixth place at 13-over-par, and four Wildcats are also currently in the top 20.

What head coach Brian Craig is saying:

“Today was a demanding challenge at The University Club. Overall, we played quite well with the fifth best round of the day. I love our position. This is why we train every day – to get in competitive situations like this. You have to love it, and we do.”

About the lineup:

Lukas Euler rebounded nicely from a double bogey near the beginning of his round when he canceled out the blemish with two birdies over the last four holes. Euler, who climbed 25 notches on the leaderboard, went on to pick up three more birdies – two consecutive at the 11th and 12th holes – on the back nine and shoot even par for his second round of the week. The sophomore’s 72 is his second lowest round in his last five. He is one of three Wildcats tied for 18th place at 4-over par.

Cooper Musselman played a solid front nine with two birdies through the first four holes. The junior ultimately went on to shoot 77, 5-over par, but is still in the top 10 and tied for eighth place at 1-over par.

Stephen Stallings and Chip McDaniel join Euler in 18th place. Stallings shot a 1-over-par 37 on the front and closed the back nine out with two birdies at the par-4 15th and par-5 17th holes. McDaniel fired a round of 3-under par, 75. Fred Allen Meyer is tied for 71st place.

The Tournament Field:

After an 8-over-par performance, No. 6 LSU leads the field at 4-under par, while No. 19 Duke is the next closest at 3-over par. No. 18 Virginia is in third place at 4-over par, and No. 29 Northwestern and No. 7 Oregon are tied for fourth place at 12-over par. UK is a mere stroke off their pace.

In the NCAA Regional, the Wildcats placed fourth in 2016 and 2014, 10th in 2013, ninth in 2009, 17th in 2008, 10th in 2006, fourth in 2005, first in 2004 and sixth in 2003.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals to be played May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

About the course:

Designed and overseen by PGA Champion David Toms and Jim Lipe, the University Club provides a test for the some of the best golfers in the country at a long 7,700 yards. This week, the course will play at just over 7,300 yards and Par 72.

The Wildcats will tee off at 8:45 a.m. off the first tee.
