UK Track & Field NCAA East Preliminary Championships Fields Announced

The Kentucky track and field teams will have 44 entries at next week’s NCAA East Preliminary Championships, as the meet’s field was announced on Thursday.

The UK women’s team qualified 24 entries, and the UK men’s team qualified 20.

Kentucky will serve as host institution for the NCAA East Prelims next weekend at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex.

Additionally, Kentucky has its first qualifier for the NCAA National Championships as Tim Duckworth was named to the NCAA Championships decathlon field, which will be contested the first two days of NCAAs at Oregon’s Hayward Field June 7-8.

For the heptathlon and decathlon, the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list were accepted into the Championships. Heptathlon and decathlon are not contested at preliminary championships sites.

For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams were accepted into the competition. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the preliminary sites.

Twelve performers from each preliminary site advance to the NCAA Championships – hosted for the fifth straight year as part of a nine-year run at Hayward Field – June 7-10.

Duckworth is the No. 4-seed in the decathlon after his school-record 7973 at the Bulldog Decathlon earlier this season. He was the No. 9 seed in the NCAA decathlon last season going on to place 11th at the NCAA meet. He earned silver in the NCAA indoor heptathlon in March.

The seventh-ranked UK women’s team had 24 qualifiers entered into East Preliminary Championships this season. UK had a school-record 31 entries last year, and 25 in 2014 and 2015.

Kentucky has the seventh most women’s preliminary championships entries in the nation (24). Kentucky has the third most women’s entries in the East Region behind LSU (28) and Florida (26).

But as it relates to the NCAA Championships, qualifying entries into the preliminary championships is less significant than the number of entries who make it through prelims and advance to Eugene for the NCAA Championships.

The men’s team has 20 entries, two more than a year ago, into the East Preliminary Championships. Kentucky’s 20 entries ranks tied for the 15th most in the country.

The East and West regions are comprised of all Division I institutions in 25 states apiece for each of the two regions. The East and West Preliminary Championship will be held with parallel schedules at two sites next weekend.

Athletes will compete for the right to advance to the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Championships

The East Preliminary rounds will be contested at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium will serve as the host site for the NCAA West Preliminary rounds.

The NCAA East Preliminary Championships begin on May 25, and continue through May 27.
