In a historic moment for the Eastern Kentucky University softball program, the Colonels secured the 2024 ASUN Regular Season Softball Championship for the first time since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference and the first time since 2018. Despite a 4-1 loss on Sunday, Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) clinched at least a share of the regular season championship, marking a significant achievement in just its third season as a member institution of the ASUN.

The 2024 ASUN Regular Season Championship is the fourth in program history, with previous titles claimed in 2002, 2004, and 2018. Under the leadership of head softball coach Jane Worthington, who recently celebrated her 900th career win, EKU continues to solidify its reputation as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate softball.

With one win in the upcoming Lipscomb series at home, EKU has the opportunity to secure the outright regular season championship for the fourth time in program history. This achievement would further cement the Colonels’ dominance in the conference and position them as formidable contenders heading into the ASUN Conference Softball Championship from May 7-11 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.

Despite Sunday’s loss, EKU’s performance throughout the season has been exemplary, with notable contributions from standout players such as outfielder Makayla Mathis and infielder Jasmine Miller, both of whom delivered multi-hit performances in the game against North Florida.

Freshman pitcher Maddi Rutan, although facing adversity with her second consecutive loss, has showcased resilience and determination throughout the season, embodying the competitive spirit of the Colonels’ softball program.

As EKU looks ahead to the postseason, the team remains focused on maintaining its momentum and striving for excellence on the diamond. With their eyes set on championship glory, the Colonels are poised to make a strong statement in the ASUN Conference Softball Championship and beyond, representing Eastern Kentucky University with pride and determination.
