Kentucky track and field freshman Alexander Chukwukelu made a significant mark this week, securing his first international title on Monday by winning the 110-meter hurdles at the Nigerian Outdoor Championships.
Chukwukelu, a Texas native who hasn’t visited Nigeria since 2010, started his quest for the title on Sunday, running the fastest time in the preliminaries at 13.82 seconds during his senior international debut. He followed up with a 13.92 on Monday to clinch the gold.
A rising star for both Nigeria and the Wildcats, Chukwukelu will continue his competition in Africa at the African Athletics Championships in Cameroon from June 21-26.
