Georgetown beats Union in baseball

Rodnee Little’s lead-off triple in the bottom of the second inning helped to spark Georgetown College baseball to a 14-5 win over Union College Tuesday at Robert N. Wilson Field. The Tigers (21-9) got behind early, but a six-run, six-hit second inning was all they needed. GC batted around plus one, giving Little two at-bats in the inning.

Following his triple off the fence in center, Little scored on a pass ball. A pair of singles from Ryan Viramontes and Kendall King proved to set up the tying runs when Bruce Valentin’s errant throw to first went into shallow right field.

Brandon Benson’s fabulous hitting streak continued as he plated the go-ahead run. He then scored the winning run off Sam Medina’s sacrifice fly.

The Tigers scored another five runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the eighth for all the insurance needed.

Ryan Pearman picked up his third win of the season, going six innings and scattering seven hits with four earned runs. Most of that came in the top of the first when Joe Gaines singled and Valentin doubled.

Clean up hitter Francisco Ogando came up with one out and hit a three-run home run off the top of the fence in left center.

The next three innings were three up, three out as Pearman set down 11 straight. With two outs in the fifth, Gaines bunted for a single barely beating the throw from Viramontes. Valentin followed with an RBI triple – the final run and hit allowed by Pearman.

Steven Whisler pitched the seventh and eighth, giving up one hit and one run as Ogando struck again with a solo homerun this time. Logan Brown closed the door with setting down the side and striking out one in the ninth.

Little finished 3-for- 5 with three runs scored, while Nick Giambalvo was 3-for- 5 with two runs scored.

Benson, Sean Williams and Andrew Paz all had two RBIs.

Georgetown is back in action 5 pm Wednesday hosting Indiana University Southeast.
