Back-to-back honors for Northern Kentucky women’s tennis freshman Margita Sunjic

For the second-straight week, Northern Kentucky women’s tennis freshman Margita Sunjic has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week. It marks the first time since NKU moved to Division I that a Norse has received back-to-back honors.

Sunjic enjoyed a perfect weekend against Valparaiso and UIC, not dropping a set between singles or doubles in the top spot for both. The Sneit, Croatia, native opened up Saturday’s match by helping the Norse clinch the doubles point against Valparaiso with a 6-4 win over Kathleen Hebble and Paige Heuer, teamed up with Klara Skopac. From there, Sunjic recorded matching 6-1 sets over Hebble to put the Norse up 2-0 over the Crusaders.

She had a similar start against the Flames, winning with Skopac over Rachel Le Comber and Melika Leblanc, 6-4, to clinch the opening point for the Norse. In the No. 1 singles match, Sunjic took down Oana Manole, 6-4, 6-2. With the singles victories, Sunjic extends to a streak of seven matches won in straight sets.

NKU will play tomorrow, April 12, when the Norse make the short trip to take on Cincinnati. First serve against the Bearcats is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
