Kentucky WGolf Concludes Season at NCAA East Lansing Regional

The University of Kentucky women’s golf team concluded their season on Wednesday, finishing in eighth place at the NCAA East Lansing Regional held at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan.

With a 20-over-par 884, the Wildcats secured an eighth-place finish, concluding their journey at the regional stage.

Advancing Teams

The top five teams from the regional, including Southern California, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Pepperdine, earned berths to the NCAA Women’s Golf Tournament at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Individual Performances

  • Laney Frye, an All-American and All-Southeastern Conference golfer, led the Kentucky lineup, finishing tied for 20th place with a 3-over-par 219. Frye showcased her talent with a remarkable 1-over-par 73 in the final round, which included two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 13.
  • Marissa Wenzler and Marta López Echevarría tied for 34th place, posting a pair of 7-over-par 223s. Wenzler, in her final college tournament, carded a 5-over-par 77 in the last round, while López Echevarría, in her debut NCAA Regional appearance, recorded a 7-over-par 79.
  • Cathryn Brown, a freshman from Eddyville, Kentucky, impressed in her first NCAA Regional, finishing tied for 41st place with a 9-over-par 225. Brown showcased her potential with birdies on the front nine before concluding with a 3-over-par 75 in the final round.
  • María Villanueva Aperribay, a graduate student in her last appearance for the Wildcats, recorded an 8-over-par round, securing a share of 53rd place with a 12-over-par 228.

Season Highlights

Despite the conclusion of their season, the Wildcats boasted a strong performance throughout the year. With a 290.2 stroke average, they achieved the third-best single-season stroke average in program history. Additionally, the team secured four finishes inside the top five during the 2023-24 season, highlighting their consistency and competitive spirit.
