The incomparable pipeline between the Kentucky men’s basketball program and the NBA elite was on full display Friday night as the league announced its 2025-26 All-Defensive teams. Former Wildcats Bam Adebayo and Cason Wallace both secured spots on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, cementing their reputations as two of the most impactful lockdown defenders in professional basketball.
Beyond his on-court excellence, Adebayo was also named the recipient of the prestigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award, capping off a historic night for the Miami Heat franchise cornerstone and the University of Kentucky alumni network.
Bam Adebayo: Rewriting the Kentucky Record Books
With his selection to the 2025-26 All-Defensive Second Team, Bam Adebayo continues to build a Hall of Fame resume anchored by defensive versatility. This marks the sixth consecutive All-Defensive selection of Adebayo’s nine-year career, a milestone that officially elevates him past future Hall of Famer Anthony Davis for the most All-Defensive honors by any Kentucky player in NBA history.
Adebayo’s unique ability to switch seamlessly across all five positions remained the engine behind the Miami Heat’s defensive identity this season. The elite center put together a dominant statistical campaign on the glass and in the passing lanes:
- Defensive Rebounds: 8.0 per game (matching a career high and marking only the second time in his career he has crossed the 8.0 defensive board threshold).
- Steals: 1.2 per game.
- Blocks: 0.7 per game.
The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy: A Legacy of Impact
In tandem with his defensive accolades, Adebayo was awarded the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award. This honor recognizes an NBA player for driving equality, engaging under-resourced populations, and carrying on Abdul-Jabbar’s lifelong mission of social activism.
As part of the honor, a $100,000 donation will be made by the NBA to the Bam, Books, and Brotherhood Foundation, an organization Adebayo championed to improve literacy and mentorship opportunities for underprivileged youth. With this win, Adebayo becomes the second Kentucky alumnus to capture the trophy, joining Karl-Anthony Towns (2024).
Kentucky Roots: During his lone season in Lexington (2016-17), Adebayo was the ironman for John Calipari’s squad, starting all 38 games, capturing an SEC Tournament Title, and reaching the Elite Eight while averaging 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. He was selected 14th overall by Miami in the 2017 NBA Draft.
Cason Wallace: The NBA’s Premier Ball Hawk
While Adebayo represents sustained veteran dominance, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace represents the vanguard of the NBA’s elite perimeter defenders. In just his third professional season, Wallace earned his first career All-Defensive Team selection, validating his reputation as one of the most feared point-of-attack defenders in the league.
Wallace was the defensive anchor for an Oklahoma City team that terrorized the Western Conference, capturing a conference-best 64-18 regular-season record. Under his watch, the Thunder defense choked out opponents, allowing a Western Conference-low 107.9 points per game. Wallace’s defensive metrics were staggering:
- Total Steals: 150 (Led the entire NBA).
- Steals Per Game: 1.9 thefts per contest.
This honor marks the latest milestone in Wallace’s rapid professional ascent. After earning NBA All-Rookie Team honors in 2023-24, Wallace played a crucial role in delivering an NBA Championship to Oklahoma City in 2024-25, and has now added elite individual defensive hardware to his trophy case.
Kentucky Roots: Wallace’s defensive instincts were evident from the moment he stepped onto the floor for Kentucky in 2022-23. An All-SEC Freshman Team selection, he averaged 11.7 points and 2.0 steals per game. He famously tied Kentucky’s single-game record for thefts when he recorded 8 steals against Michigan State in the Champions Classic before being drafted 10th overall in 2023.
Kentucky’s Decade of NBA Dominance
The double-selection of Adebayo and Wallace extends an incredible streak of professional excellence for the Kentucky basketball program. Alumni from the university have claimed at least one major NBA year-end award or All-NBA/All-Defensive honor every single year since 2021.
